Hi. Here's my issue hopefully someone can help me out.

I have verizon dsl service with a Westell 6100 modem and a linksys router hooked up to it. Previously, I had a laptop solely that hooked up fine through this wireless router connection. I was given an oldish desktop computer to have as a second one in the house. The plan was to set up the desktop computer to be connected to the modem and router (that already existed and was working fine) and then to continue to connect the laptop wirelessly through this router.

After much resetting, pinging and reading on forums - this is where i stand and i'm confused.

I have the desktop hooked up to the Westell modem & linksys router. The laptop is finding the wireless connection and connecting to the internet no problem.

The desktop SAYS it is connected to the internet but the browser doesnt actually connect to the internet.

If i plug in the modem without the router directly to the desktop, the internet works but obviously not on the laptop.

Any advice to get the desktop to connect to the internet with the router & modem plugged in so both computers will connect?

Thanks!

How about posting this for the desktop connected to the router.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address)

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Try booting the desktop in Safe Mode with Networking and see if it connects. The indications are that something is blocking it.

I'm assuming you tried the same cable to the laptop and were able to connect? If not, I'd like you to try that and see if the cable or router port is the issue.

yes, i tried the same cable to laptop and it doesnt connect - only connects through wireless set up

i connected in the desktop in safe mode and it does not conect to the internet - only when the router is unplugged & the modem is directly connected does it work...but then the wireless/laptop dont work.

any ideas?

thanks for your help.

If you've tried the cable with the desktop and the laptop and neither connect, it sounds like the cable or the port on the router is the problem, not the machine! I'd change the port on the router and use a new cable.

i changed all the cable and still the same problem. it doesnt make sense. how would the router work for the laptop but stop the internet working on the desktop if the router is connected. its one or the other and super frustrating. any ideas? a new router? but this router works for the laptop.

i also tried all the ports and no success unless i'm supposed to change something by 'changing the ports' other than unplug & Plug into a different one.

hi, you should be able to log into the router with your desktop through the ethernet port. forget the internet till this two can talk to each other the linksys should send the same popup admin login you see wirelessly. the ethernet port on the pc should seen two way traffic as bytes sent and receive. check this in the local area connection also the tcp/ip settings should be set to server assigns automatic ip and dns. also is usb a option on the router?

The only other issue here could be an electrical grounding issue between the units. I've seen oddball compatibility issues between Ethernet connections, many times sticking a cheap Ethernet switch in the middle fixes it.
