Desktop Log On:problems!

I find that I and two other family members can't access any thing from the desktop once logged in. I click something, the hourglass pops up for a bit, then no progression. Only thing that will access is Mozilla Firefox which I downloaded a few days ago. This log on mystery developed about three days ago.
I tried system restore at several points, nothing. And when I did that I'd get a message that read: McAfee Active Shield components missing..? Protection is fine at my current point.
I'm totally at a loss. I've never messed with registry files, only use defrag about twice a month. Emptied temp files, cookies.
Any idea what's up?

Try the 5 Step process.

If you get stuck on a step, continue on to ensure you complete all 5 steps. But it is very important that you post why you couldn't complete the step.
