desktop icons?

all my destop icons have this ugly arrow on them (short cut arrow). when i first had the PC the shortcut arrows werent there. How would i remove the arrows?

Im running on windows xp professional

Download TweakUI. Open TweakUI, expand the Explorer tree, select Shortcut, then on the Shortcut Overlay choose None. Click Apply, and then OK.
