SH, sorry to hear they stopped making the post-script printer you want. I'd say try printing with Photoshop (if I remember right you have access to it), copy the files into a new document (this will set up the image in the native working space in case the files aren't in it already (probably Adobe RGB or sRGB). You don't necessarily need to be in cmyk on-screen, as the conversion is made in the print process anyway. Set your resolution to at least 300 pixels per inch, and give the print a try. You will most likely (if using color) need to adjust the color settings in Photoshop to get good color fidelity.
Hope this advice helps you out at all.. you probably already considered all of this. I never really played around with much post script, only had to professionally print images and non post-script text.

P.S. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to print a pdf (are you using a pc or mac?) The best answer would be from HP.
