my first time on a forum, so bear with me. my wife's latitude d500, we have never heard the fan operate. recently had a problem where it would not power up, left it a few days, everything fine now, but suspect fan doesnt work, and maybe it overheated. Is there a simple way to test the fan operation, is there a command to "make" the fan work?

First check your temps if you are indeed overheating. Try using NHC or SpeedFan or similar so you can see your temp readings. I have observed in most of my laptops that the fans do not run until needed. May be the same is with your unit. Also try the link below if it will help...
