I have a Dell latitude 630 that locks up during the Windows XP startup screen and then i can only shut it down by holding the power switch. This problem will continue every time i bootup the laptop unless I take out the battery for a minute then replace the battery and then it boots just fine. then after awhile it starts not booting again, but the battery trick seems to work all the time. what is the underlying problem?

Instead of using the laptop battery, try using the AC adapter and see if that helps. Also you might want to replace the battery since it only happens when the battery is hook on to the laptop, correct?

doesn't make a difference plugged in or on battery power it still locks up until i take the battery out. that must be reseting some piece of hardware or interupt but i don't know which.
