Dell Inspiron 700m sound not working

I have a Dell Inspiron 700m, and this laptop after multiple openings and closings will cut the wires leading to built-in speakers, so I use external ones. Last night the sound was working perfectly, but when I tried watching something today they just didn't work. I've tried using my headphones, and the sound is really really quiet and sort of distorted, even if the volume is all the way up, so I know it's something wrong with my laptop and not my speakers (If I put the volume all the way up on my speakers, the computer and the video, I can kind of hear it from the speakers, but again it's low and sort of distorted). I'm positive nothing is muted at all, because I've checked. I've also downloaded the latest drivers (SigmaTel, which I was using before this happened also), but no avail. And it's also nothing wrong with my browser, because the sound doesn't work with videos I have on my laptop either. I am using XP with service pack 3. Can anyone help?

Just check for me that you have plugged the speakers into the right output as I make that mistake pretty often and the symptoms are remarkably similar.

If they are definitely in the correct plug then it sounds like a loose hardware contact in the sound card.
