Dell Inspiron 6400 - dont know the correct drivers to download

Hi guys,

I recently aquired a Dell inspiron 6400 laptop from my sister it was running Vista as its original operating system which had just crippled the computer so I have backgraded to the XP operating system.

I think I need to get some drivers now as when I plug my ethernet cable direct to the laptop from my router I dont get internet and my friend says i need network drivers - I should imagine I need other drivers to!

I found a post on this forum from someone else who was having the same problem and some friendly guys directed him to the dell site for driver downloads etc - I have found this my only problem is there are so many different drivers for each category how are you supposed to know which one you need?

There was an enter service tag option which I am doing but I think there is a problem with the site as it just comes up with an error after trying to load the next page after entering the tag

Does anyone know exactly which drivers I will need and if so what order I need to install them in?

I dont have any original disc or anything with this laptop so im relying soley on downloading what I need to get myself up and running.

Cheers guys

i'm in the same situation, we could start our own little sad club for the driver-less pirates.

theoretically we need all the drivers that the dell site recommends...you select your laptop model and os and dell recommends drivers for you , but like you said above something must be wrong with the site cuz i can't download anything either, for my windows 7(says nothing to download).

so far my display is elongated and it doesn't recognize my external HD after the last update(says a pci driver is missing) when i troubleshoot-ed my laptop.

good luck
Well I can see the reccomended drivers for a dell inspiron 6400 - however there is like 11 network drivers surely I dont need all 11?

And so on so forth for all the categories - I thought I would need to choose just one of each.

If you put in your Service Tag, you should only be offered the drivers for your specific pc.

See this for the order they should be installed:

There is only one driver for the wired adaptor . . download the one for Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller The wireless is probably the Intel Pro/Wireless

Be sure to use IE and do not use the Dell Download Manager!

Just download the driver file, save it to a flash drive or burn to a cd, on the Inspiron, double click to install

On the list of drivers, click on the driver file:

Then the download button here:

thanks, so is that broadcom driver you just suggested the driver I need to get my internet running?

Unfortunately when i use that service tag thing I just get an error - also I am worried as I have backgraded from Vista to XP if I click my service tag in will it suggest drivers to me that would be suitable for a vista set up and not a XP set up?

Cheers
its possible that the vista drivers will work with xp too ...worth a try....

You choose the operating system once you are on the driver download page . . it has both XP and Vista drivers

Cheers
my Comp is working perfect now thanks for the help guys - much appreciated
