The system tool utility Disc defragmenter is not working on my (2000) Windows ME OS. Is it a matter of lack of space? How would I check for this ?- in detail please-. The program starts and goes to 3% then starts over again. Any help to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Reboot into Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears)
Click Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>ScanDisk
After you run Scandisk Click Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmentor

Disc Defragmenter not working

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have used "Scan Disk" and "Clean Disk" as suggested but my Windows ME will only let Degragmenter start to run up to 3% and then starts over. Anybody have any further steps to take?

It's possible a log file is corrupted, delete the Applog folder then restart Windows and run the defragmenter.

You may need to change windows explorer to show hidden files and folders first to find the applog folder in the windows directory.

The windows\applog folder will be automatically recreated.
