Hi ~ I am not quite a novice but definitely not an experienced tech person, but can follow instructions well, and I need your help please ~

Running:
Toshiba Satellite Notebook
1.73GHz
100GB
512MB
XP2
CCleaner
Clean Up
Diskeeper Lite
AVG free
Spybot
Adaware

59% free space

Lots of graphics and music as that's my work.
Am getting an external hard drive in a month to take the load off, but at present this computer is what I need working.

All was fine last night but this morning my laptop was really slow and sluggish, so I did my usual routine of cleanUp ccleaner and defrag.
near the end of the defrag the computer just shut down.

I could not start it up normally ~ so started in safe mode ~ all looked good so I tried to defrag again and it shut down again.

I repeated the above, ran all virus checks and spyware programs all came up clean. Decided to do a O&O defrag thinking it was diskeeper lite ~ but after 5 hours and only 48% defragged I stopped ~ then did a disk check which took 3 hours @ 80% before it threw me a blue screen error message:

STOP: c000021a Unknown Hard Error
Unknown Hard Error

I got a phone call from a mate who borrowed a graphics cd I had tried to copy for him and he tried to copy it and it shut down his computer and has caused him issues also.

So I did a System Restore back 2 weeks and rebooted ~ all was going swimmingly till I just deleted 20GB of music and tried to defrag, and again it shut me down.

I have started in last known good config and after the computer did a scan itself ~ all is well again. ( I am not defragging again this weekend ~ I am exhausted after nearly 12 hours solid working on this, I need it working as it is my business )

However, I need some advice with regard to this error message,
Is it fixable ?
If so how ?
and how do I defrag again if it shuts down all the time ????

The system has been shutdown.


With my error message ~ the computer DOES NOT shut down. It only came up during a Disk Error check of C Drive, which I initiated, and it stayed on the screen until I turned the power off.

I believe they are different issues. (Correct me if I am wrong )

it looks like it could be a hard drive error but do you have any diagnostics program you could use to find out? Do Toshiba have a diagnostic partition installed on the notebook which you can access via one of the F numbers?
