I have a machine running XP Pro. It is setup usually to connect to the internet via dial-up.

At some point something happened to it (Not sure what) such that web pages cannot be accessed. I installed a NIC and connected it to my router and set it up for my network and broadband.

It still will NOT connect to web pages. It will not resolve addresses, it will NOT connect to the IP associated to an address, but it can successfully ping internet IP's.

The DNS servers are entered in manually and have been checked several times to be certain that they are correctly entered.

The computer CAN see other Win XP boxes on my network and transfer files to and from them.

1. I ran sfc on it with no avail.
2. I reinstalled IE6 (had to set IE IsInstalled to 0 in reg b4 install, process is in Knowledgebase) with no luck.
3. I installed Netscape (7something) with no progress made.

Are there any "mission critical" files, like winsock, that I can reinstall?

If there are can you please list them (I can't seem to find a list in the knowledge base) and where they are located?

Any help would be appreciated.

You can start by uninstalling all of the networking components and starting from scratch. This will frequently fix this kind of issue.
Sorry I didn't mention but I tried that first.

When you try to view web pages do you get "action cancelled" or "this page cannot be displayed"?
I get "This page cannot be displayed". Sorry but your article does not have information for WinXP. The winsock files are all different and in different places.

Thanks

P.S. They updated that article. The number is 241344.

Define "delete". Remember this machine usually only uses dial-up, and this is windows XP. The dial-up connections were uninstalled completly and reinstalled to try and fix the problem first.

When I hooked it up to my network I had to install a NIC so TCP/IP was not installed to begin with for that. Is there some process by which you are refering to by asking if I tried deleting TCP/IP and reinstalling it?

I will go into the LAN properties and delete TCP/IP, restart and then reinstall TCP/IP to see what happens.

Thank you,
GICodeWarrior

EDIT: No luck... It is not possible to only uninstall the TCP/IP protocal from the LAN Connection. I had to uninstall and reinstall the adapter driver.
