Can someone please explain how exactly decoding and encoding ties into DVD media and or CD media, such as VCDs and SVCDs? I thought that converting from AVI to MPEG-2 was called transcoding, not encoding? Yet, in TMPG Encoder, they call it encoding from AVI to MPEG1 and MPEG2. Can someone please explain these two terms (encoding and decoding), and how they relate to video media such as VCDs and DVDs?

encoding/decoding/transcoding

Transcoding has nothing to do with converting AVI to other formats such as VCD/divx etc as far as I know. Transcoding is when you adapt, for example, web content so that it can be viewed on different types of devices. For example, when you view your stock web page on your pda it has to be transcoded so that it can be viewed easily. Transcoding is important for webmasters who desire people on many types of devices--cell phone, pda, computer monitor, etc.-- to be able to access their site.

encoding is taking, for example, AVI video and applying an algorithm to it that "compresses" it by removing or changing to shorthand part of hte information. much of the information in an AVI or WAV file can be removed w/o affecting quality much, making the encoded file much smaller.

decoding is "reading" this encoded information.

cheers.
