Hey All,

First post and its not a great one :(. I have a Seagate 40GB Barracuda drive (ST340014A) and it’s completely dead, BIOS does not see the drive at all but I know its spinning. Tried it on another PC, same deal, sounds like its dead. So I have three options..

1) Try one of these external USB enclosures, although, I doubt that will make any difference.

2) Go a little crazy and replace the PCB on the bottom of the drive, its a common model and I have seen plenty of them around with the same PCB revision.

3) Or send it to a data recovery company.

Anyone have any experience with the above points? Have you ever had a hard drive fail to recognize in the bios but found it works in a external USB enclosure? Can anyone recommend a reliable data recovery company?

Thanks!

Welcome to TSf.

Completely dead? No clicking?
An external enclosure won't help - the only difference will be making it worse (if possible).
A replacement PCB might help - but try having the drive as the only device on the ribbon cable first (for example - borrow the CD drive's cable).

Thanks for the reply eneles,

No ticking, nothing at all, just spins. Tried it as the only drive on the cable and the BIOS just does not see it. Looks like I will send it off to a data recovery service and keep my fingers crossed!
