Dcads pop ups - help with removal

1175 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  amateur
I've seen a few other threads for this, so it seems the forum is experienced with this problem: I keep getting pop ups that say something like "contextual ads provided by Dcads...", that I would very much like to go away.

I have both firefox (preferred) and IE browsers and it happens similarly on both.

Hopefully, I've followed instructions correctly and attached the right files.

Many thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Since you're using AVG8 now, please go to Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and remove the following. It's not a good idea to have more than one antivirus applications installed at the same time, even if the others are disabled:

Norton SystemWorks
Norton™ Security Scan

While you're there, you may as well uninstall these too:

BitTorrent

P2P file sharing practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Please read this sticky:

Perils of P2P File Sharing

I would strongly urge you to remove it via Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel as suggested in our
NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help page.

  • p2p programs like uTorrent, Bittorrent, LimeWire, Morpheus, etc., as they are a major conduit for malware and a likely source of your current issues. See this link

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java(TM) 6 Update 3

These are all outdated, and security risks by having them installed still. Unfortunately, Java does not uninstall these older versions when you update, nor tell you that you should. Java(TM) 6 Update 11 can be updated from the Java control panel Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now. An update should begin; follow the prompts.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

    To disable AVG:

Please open the AVG 8 Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG 8 icon on task bar.

    * Click on Tools.
    * Select Advanced Settings.
    * In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
    * In the main pane, deselect the option to "Enable Resident Shield."
    * To re-enable AVG 8, when Combofix is done, please select "Enable Resident Shield" again.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

# Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: Please make sure that your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled. A reboot should have done this.
