Dates

We screen applications where I work. However, the applicants don't always have continuous, related experience. Most of the times, they have several periods of time for which we can give them credit. Is there a way to add up all the periods in a single continuous one? I know how to figure out years, months and dates of the periods but I cannot add them (number of days in months are not the same!!!) . Thanks.
