My acer pc died and following useful advice on this forum I removed the hard drive and bought a caddy. The problem is that whilst I can see all my files from the old c drive I cannot see them from the old partitioned d drive. Is there a reason fro this?

Do you get any error ? I assume this is connected via a USB External Enclosure ? Can you post a screen shot of the drive in DiskManager so we can see the partition layout also let us know the make and model of the hard drive

I am not at my machine at the moment. It is an Acer Sata drive and it shows the partition but claims that the old c drive has lots of data but the old d drive doesn't.

So right now you're trying to retrieve your data from your laptop's hard disk drive using a rack (caddy) attached to a desktop pc? On some older bios you had to set the maximum storage capacity of a new hard disk drive you wanted to attach to your computer. That might be the problem in this case.
