I'm not sure you can directly convert a .dat file to a mp3, but here is something you might try:
First, rename the file to .mp3 and see if it opens.
If it does open and plays, good. But if every singe file you download with Kazaa ends with an error message, then something is wrong- you might have to reinstall Kazaa before things start to work. It would be helpful to know what kind of a connection you have as well (your proxy information, etc.) as you might only need to change some settings in Kazaa.
