My cpu fan popped off the cpu a few weeks ago and my PC shut off after the cpu overheated. I continued to turn it on until it overheated and shut off about 10 times or so until i used Coretemp to check and see that it was overheating to 105 degrees. At this point i got some new thermal paste and got the temp down to about 40. Since then however, my pc shuts down after being on for about 20 minutes and doesnt turn on for about 10 minutes and sometimes also until i unplug and plug the power cord back in. Cpu temp remains at 40 I have removed each ram stick and even bought a new case/ power supply yet it still happens. What do you think? CPU damage?

the psu is very low quality add to that its way to small for the system, you need a good quality psu such as corsair or seasonic.
What video card are you using?

Oddly, the old psu was 150w and worked for about 3 months before I had the cpu-overheating issues. This psu is new and at 250w. I am using the core I3 integrated graphics. So no graphics card.

Allied PSU's are junk and 250W is not sufficient.
Do you intend to add a dedicated GPU in the future?

Alright just added a CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W ATX12V V2.2 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply. Unfortunately the problem is the same. turns on for about 10 minutes and then turns off for randomly and doesn't turn on for about 10 minutes. I feel like the fact that it doesn't turn back on for a while is heating. Yet the temp reads in the high 30's and low 40's every time. Do you think my processor is done? Or am I missing some sort of simple solution. Could it be a hard drive issue?

Clean and redo the thermal paste any way, inspect the cpu for any sign of a bluish tint.
remove all drives and cards except video, start it up enter bios, let it idle in there and keep a eye on the temps and voltages and post them here.

Note how long in bios before the shutdown if at all

I built a Core i3 550 based system and am experiencing the same problem --- computer will shut down during gaming, and will not turn on for several minutes. I have to unplug the system and let it sit for awhile.

Switched out PSUs, case. Using the internal graphics of the i3. As far as I can tell, the CPU is not overheating (idles at 18 celcius). I am really scratching my head on this one.. Maybe it has to do with the internal graphics? I was going to try a discrete graphics card..

I think I've solved this --- it had to do with the motherboard chipset overheating. I was at my wits end, and the heatsink on the motherboard for the north bridge was somewhat weak; it had a shroud over the top of it, that while looked nice, was blocking the cooling potential. So I took the heatsink off, cleaned the gunk off it and the chip, put on some arctic silver 5, removed the shroud.

I had the PC running a game for 2+ hours and didn't shut down once..
