You would put a vpn router at the main site and the clients using the vpn client software would connect to the server via the vpn client software thru the 3g provided internet.

I was doing this stuff in my previous job. Just purchase yourself a few sim cards with static ip's from the 3g provider. Each client should have one static ip and all the static ip's should be in the same subnet. like 10.0.0.2 , 10.0.0.3 and so on and let the server be 10.0.0.10. you can put some custom firmware on all the dongles of you want. Make sure they can ping each other after you connect to the 3g network. its that simple.

everlastin777 since the 3g dongles put you on the internet how are you getting from the internet to the server? Since 10x is private ip it can't go thru the internet.

So how are they connecting to the server?

Wand3r3r. Since you are one of the main networking legends in this forum.....its my pleasure to make sure that you get this. Leave the internet out in this case. lets say you got 5 computers on different locations..... 1 server and 4 clients that you want on a WAN like network. That means you need to go and buy 5 static ips from your 3G provider and make sure that you tell them to put it on the same subnet. They will give you 5 sim cards and 5 dongles. Then you put one of the 5 dongles on the server with the sim that contains the static ip 10.1.0.10 for example. Put in the right settings and connect it with the software. Put the dongle on client A which will be 10.1.0.1. Put in the right settings and connect it with the software Client B is 10.1.0.2 and so on. Try to ping each other after being connected. If it does ping then it means you succeeded. If not then it means that your firewall needs to be checked. If you want the internet on any of the 5 computers, you need to disconnect from the private network on the ppp adapter and then use the ethernet. Thats how we used to have vpn in our place.it was pretty cool.

I understand the physical aspect of what you write. What does not add up is your ip addressing as well as having the server and pcs raw on the internet. What you infer is the dongles can do a private wifi network as well as internet connection. I have never seen a 3g dongle that fits those specs.

I have seen using a 3g dongle to share internet with others
I have seen vpn access to a private network via 3G dongle.
I have seen 3g dongle in a 3g router.

Do you have a link to those 3G dongles you used?

"If you want the internet on any of the 5 computers, you need to disconnect from the private network on the ppp adapter and then use the ethernet."

Two things, one is the OP clearly states computers are far apart so using the lan port is not an option. Two is if the lan port was a option you would only use the 3G for internet access. You can do both lan and internet at the same time. Trick is no gateway entry on the lan zettings. So why, in your case, would you use the 3g to create a private network when you have the lan available?

See why what you write isn't adding up for me?

Im talking about the second case that you mentioned in your post. VPN access to a private network on a 3g dongle. just thought that this guy wanted the clients and the server on a vpn like network. My solution in this case does not include the internet.

thank you all for your reviews and opinions...........here i jus want a network created between a server and few clients...internet connectivity is not mandatory. besides i tried calling up my GSM network support centre and they jus dont hav any idea about it... and since the IP provided for the GSM sim is Dynamic, ofcourse the default gateway is static, how and where will i get a static ip sim??? i am using an Aircel 3G GSM Dongle.
And i would want to know if any1 of you here have tried configuring a VPN using a dongle. if yes... HOW? please help.

Lujin imchen you would start by purchasing a vpn router that has client vpn software. You then load that software on the pc. You connect to the internet. Then you start the vpn software. You input the routers wan ip address and vpn logon information which connects you to the vpn router and the lan behind it.

The only static ip you need is the one for the vpn router. We use sonicwall vpn firewall appliance for this.

HHmmmm...sounds good... thank you so much guys...i will update you. besides i am planning to use a leased line for the server and data cards or leased line for other clients since the only requirement is that the client should identify the sever ip in the network With FTP. thank you again .i am impressed

If this is the case, first your ftp server is on your private lan and you have port forwarded port 21 to that static lan ip. All you need then is a ftp client on the client pc and the wan ip of the router.
