A couple days ago, I replaced my aging TI-4200 with a Geforce 6600GT. I have the latest nvidia drivers installed, my system is free of spyware and viruses and this problem started just as soon as I installed my new video card.

Whenever I play any type of video in any program, my CPU usage spikes up to 100%, and will not go down unless I close the program which is running the video. Everything else on my computer works fine, but this problem came up as soon as I swapped out my video card.

My system is fine, and I do not run any processes which would suck up that much speed. My specs if needed:

AMD Athlon XP 2600+
ABIT KD7 Motherboard
Gigabyte GeForce 6600GT 128MB AGP
1GB of DDR333 ram
550W Power Supply
40GB ATA-100 Hard Drive

I would really appreciate any help, because videos are one thing I do on this machine along with gaming. Also, formatting the HD is NOT an option for me.

Whoops, forgot to include a hijackthis log. Hopefully it will help, though I dont believe I have any spyware/viruses/malware that is causing this, since it just started when I installed my 6600GT.

Anyways, here it is:

Video card drivers are funny things, You need to completely uninstall all previuous video drivers BEFORE installing driver for the new card, so now you have to uninstall BOTH drivers before reinstalling the new drivers.

Let us know if this helps you as it may help others with a similar problem.

I think this is a driver or codec issue. If reinstalling the driver does not work then try this.
Download a earlier version like 71.84 from Make sure you use a driver cleaner to remove all remains of any previous versions.

I completely uninstalled the old drivers, and used the driver cleaner to wipe out anything left before I uninstalled the new ones.

However, I was using older drivers on my TI-4200. I'll try out the 71.84 drivers (which sounds familiar, I might have ran them on my old card) and see if that solves my problem.

Woohoo! That did it! Problem solved. Installed the old 71.84 drivers, and videos play now...not to mention game peformance has increased slightly (not by much, but its noticeable).

Thanks for the help guys! Seems to me that the new drivers just well....suck :p.
