Well, can't help you with the Bearshare issues, as we do not support point-to-point software.

However, I suggest you slave your hard drive on another XP sysem, and run a full virus scan on it. Then, reinstall it and do a repair installation using your XP cd.
thanks, but i'm not very computer savvy, and don't understand what slave a hard drive is, furthermore- this is a brand new (2 weeks) e-machine, but it didn't come with an XP disc, is that normal??

Now was that file that important that you felt you needed to disable the most important piece of software on your system ???

Post a HJT log in the HiJackThisLog Help Forum. Follow these instructions please. O yeah I'm positive you will be asked to remove Bearshare when they try to repair your system

Download and install: HiJackThis.

(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders or Desktop. A good place to make a folder would be in My Documents, as this is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)

Then doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Do A System Scan And Save Log". Make sure all Windows and Browsers are closed.
When the scan is finished, best to save your text file in the same folder as where you put HiJackthis.

IMPORTANT!!!
Create a New Topic and include a fresh HJT log in the HiJackThisLog Help Forum and Copy/Paste the info from your saved Hijackthis log file into your new topic.

A Moderator/ Security Team Analyst will give you instructions.

thanks geekgirl, i'll give that a try.
FYI: i know you probably think the file i was downloading was some sort of smut, but it wasn't- it was a movie making program, so i could make a slide show of our honeymoon for my wife (i already did one with win movie maker, but i wanted something better).
*slaps forehead* Do you know what a virus scanner does? It's fairly simple. Your active scanner checks all files coming into your computer for viruses. If while you were downloading a file from bearshare, your virus scanner popped up... THAT MEANS YOU'RE DOWNLOADING A VIRUS! That means you stop downloading, it does NOT mean you deactivate your only source of protection. Many files on P2P programs (bearshare is one) are fake. Do the HijackThis scan and post there. Also, make sure you press CTRL + ALT + DELTE and click the processes tab and list everything running.
