hi everyone. here's my comp
Asus A7A266
Inno3D geforce2 MX200 64 mb
512MB DDR samsung
Sony DVD
Lite On CDRW
Maxtor 40GIG hard drive 5400rpms
3Com 56k
Realteck Ethernet card
Creative SoundBlaster Live

recently when i installed a new heatsink and fan, i booted my computer up and it would show where it would read the memory part, then it froze. i restarted and it didn't boot up anymore. i took off my heatsink and fan. took of the Athlon 1.4 Tbird and on the bottom was a sticker that was all black. i bought a new one and installed it. it did the same exact thing. I asked someone on my dorm floor what was wrong. they said it was the tape in back. but when i bought this computer 5 months ago it ran fine with the old processor's tape on back. i checked my jumpers and they're all on default. my power supply is an Antec 400W. is my motherboard fried? the motherboard's power LED comes on. i'm not sure what's wrong anymore. should i have a professional look at it? thanks!!!!

Hello d21x and welcome to Tech Support Forums.

When you install a heatsink and fan on the processor you need to be extra careful with three things.

1 being careful to keep the heatsink flat on the cpu and try not to tip it when latching the retainer clip onto the tab.

2 Is to make real sure that part of the heatsink is not sitting on the raised portion of the cpu socket.

3 Never under any circumstance turn on the machine without a heatsink and fan properly installed.

when i installed the heatsink and fan did all that. laid it straight and made sure the padded parts of the heatsink and fan were touching. oh and i never turned on the comuter without a heatsink or fan. iono if this would matter but when i had my old athlon in i did changed the BIOS settings so the 1.4ghz was down to 1.0ghz. would this effect my cpu? if so how can i change the settings back without going into BIOS. i know i can change the multiplier and all that but what settings do i manually set them equal to? or is there a way i can reset all my BIOS settings without going into it because i can't bootup. thanks!!!

Hello Again

If you have your manual you can look at these settings in it to confirm.

Set jumper on JEN to 2&3

Set all switches on DSW to off

Set VID jumper to 1&2

Make sure fan is connected to CPU-FAN as some motherboards will not run unless they detect a fan on here.

Looking at the board in it's normal position with the case standing up.
The group of pins where your led's, hdd, reset and so on go, Count from the bottom right and place the wire that comes from the power on button on pins 4&5 by your count and take the rest off until later.

Almost forgot, To clear the cmos look just below the battery, There will be to dots of solder marked CLRTC you need to short these to dots together for a second to clear the cmos!

Make sure you turn the machine off and unplug it first!

Try This..:D :D
