I occasionally receive a 100% CPU usage warning on my Windows XP computer (HP Pavilion a1218n) Task Manager whenever more than two web pages are open in IE 6.0 and almost always when I'm watching a video. I currently have 508 mb of RAM and will upgrade to an additional 1 GB. Will this solve the problem?

BTW, I've already uninstalled my Norton Anti-virus software when the membership expired and replace it with Avast freeware anti-virus and clean up my computer to get rid of all the gunk. I also use C-Cleaner software regularly.

It may help. Slowness can have any number of causes, hardware or software. Assuming these are new problems:

1) Boot into safe mode and run MalwareBytes and/or Spybot Search & Destroy, and then CCleaner...then boot back into Windows.

2) Ensure you have all of the latest drivers installed, specifically the motherboard/system drivers, video drivers, and the audio drivers.

3) Defrag the HDD.

Test and see what happens. If it's still slow, I'd personnally reinstall XP.
