I was wondering if I can partition my laptop hard drive to put a linux os on it as well as xp home. can i do this w/o a complete whipe and all?

also my desktop got really messed up... i have a c and d drive, can i use the recovery cd to whipe the c and not have to reinstall my programs on the d?

Well if Windows is the thing installed on your laptop now then no. NTFS file systems don't resize easily and almost anyway you find to do it will screw up the file system.


Since the second part of your question is a windows based one I'll anwser it but it is in the wrong place.

If windows is installed on C then you will have to reinstall anything placed on D. The files will all stay in place however your registry will be wiped and it'll almost be like the programs were never installed. You may get a few to run but you'd want to re-install anyway just to make sure you have all your bases covered
