Hi there. Long time listener, first time caller. OK, I've been here a few times in the past. This place helped me out w/the femot bug. The one that gave you the minute countdown then shut you down. Lucky it was just an annoyance.

Anyway, I'm having a similar issue. My comp just shuts down. But it only occurs just when I'm online. Not a specific time or website or anything. It's just like that femot bug, except there's no countdown. It's been going on for about a week now. I can be offline w/the ocmputer on, and it won't shut down, but when I'm online, I only have a limited time before it shuts down. The odd part is that it can be w/in minutes of getting online (dialup), or I can be on for an hour and it'll do it.

I have updated and run Norton AV but it comes back clean. I also have a firewall, Agnitum Outpost 1.0

If anyone has any suggestions or comments it'd be much appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, I do have Lavasoft's Ad-aware, and I run it about every 3-4 days removing tracking cookies. Any other suggestions?

Have you checked running applications and processes that are not supposed to be there ? anything that looks out of ordinary ?

Exactly how does it "shutdown"? Did you look in the event log to see if there's any entry that might offer a clue?

•Are you sure you're not running some kind of trojan horse that allows your attacker to reboot your system?

•Are you sure it's not a hardware rather than software related issue? Problems with bad Power Supply & bad Memory Sticks can simulate software/virus problems. Start with the easiest, try a spare memory stick / try a spare power supply.

First off, my apologies, I think that I might of had the blaster virus, not the femot bug before. I got rid of that via the directions I found on this site.

Merlin....to the naked eye, everything looks normal. Nothing out of the ordinary is operating or running. I'm not too computer savvy, so I'm basically looking w/the naked eye.

johnwill....when I mean shutdown, I mean, the whole cpu just reboots. Like if you hit the restart button on the start menu....it kind of flashes black and reboots. That's exactly what mine does by itself.

breakerfall....I was infected w/Blaster, but following the directions on this site I got rid of it.
I honostly don't know if I'm running a trojan horse, because I just don't know how to check for that.
My brother has an extra power supply. I'll try that on for size next time I see him. Thanks for all the help.

•check Event Viewer,
•check Firewall Logs,
•check what ports are open and/or listening on your pc.
•Try Symantec's "Online Securyty Scan", see what comes up.

By the way, I have a friend that, same as you, he had the
W32.W.Blaster. After cleaning the virus, Norton AV is no
longer detecting any traces of the virus in his computer,
but he's still a victim of the symptoms. (Rebooting)


Also, when you said:

do you mean you were infected even before posting the first time? Or you got rid of the virus through the link I posted. I'm just wondering, I need to know if that link is of any help at all.

I got the blaster virus a month or two back, when it really hit hard and made the news big time. I found this forum via search engine. In the Win XP forum there was a thread devoted to it. I followed the thread and it eventually linked me to the symantec website that you provided and by following that along w/the instructions from the thread mentioned above, I got it all cleaned up.
