(I am not sure if this question belongs in this forum or in the Windows 7 forum).
I am running Windows XP in a virtual box on my Windows 7 Professional installed on a new i7-4790K CPU machine. It worked very well on my old machine before it crashed. Now I cannot connect various pieces of old hardware (e.g. scanner, MP3 Player etc). The hardware shows up under the USB icon when I run Windows XP - Windows Virtual PC, but trying to Attach the hardware I get the message: "Could not attach the USB device. etc". I know the USB ports are working as I have connected other devices to test. These are the USB 2.0 ports. When I look at the USB Controllers in Device Manager (Win XP) there are USB Virtualization Bus Driver and USB Virtualization Hub Driver. That's all. When I look in the Device Manager for Windows 7, there are a dozen items under the USB Controllers.
What do I need to do to be able to attach my devices in the virtual machine?

In the VM, go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager, are there any devices with yellow flags? Or under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, is there an Unknown Device? If so, these devices need drivers installed. Right click and Uninstall and then remove the USB device from the computer end.
Make sure you have the latest version of MS Virtual PC: Download Windows Virtual PC from Official Microsoft Download Center
You may need to download drivers from the motherboard manufacturer for XP.

Thank you, spunk.funk, for your reply.
This is not going well:sad: ! In device manager there is an item with yellow flags: "other devices". Under that are three items all called "Virtual PC Integration Device". I am unable to delete any of them. Tried with and without the scanner plugged in - neither attempt work. There are no other old hardware plugged in. I have also deleted Windows XP and reinstalled it followed by complete update. I have reinstalled the scanner software (Epson Perfection 1260 series / 1660 Photo) directly from the CD. Does not help.
My mother board is ASUS B85M-E/CSM. I am not sure if this is the problem as someone on the web said it does not support win XP, but would that matter in a virtual machine? I don't know what drivers I should try to find for that board - ? So, based on this - any other suggestions?

Well, it looks like the 3 devices with yellow flags are supposed to be there: Using a Host Guest communication channel in Windows Virtual PC - Windows Virtual PC - Site Home - TechNet Blogs

To start Windows XP Mode, click the Windows 7 Start button, then select All Programs > Windows Virtual PC > Windows XP Mode.

To start applications installed in Windows XP Mode from Windows 7 directly, click the Windows 7 Start button, then select All Programs > Windows Virtual PC > Windows XP Mode > Windows XP Mode Applications.

If you have problems with Virtual PC try the free Virtual Box Which is very easy to use.

Thank you, but I don't have a problem with the Virtual PC, all applications work normally and I know how to start them either way. The conundrum is that I cannot in the Virtual PC attach two pieces of hardware via the USB and I still don't know why.
