Go into command prompt. Type chkdsk /f Then you will be
prompted to select y or n to run chkdsk at the next startup.
Chkdsk cannot fix anything while running xp normally, must boot to
it...

command prompt = start (all) programs, accessories, command prompt. type
chkdsk /f
press y for yes, then reboot computer.
And to read the results after reboot, go to your event viewer (control panel, administrative tools, event viewer), application log, and look for a winlogon event. Double-click it to see the results.
