Control Panel icon keeps disappearing

I have XP home running on an HP laptop. Everything is working great except for this weird little problem - the control panel icon that I keep on the desktop vanishes at random times. There's absolutely no pattern to when it happens or what I'm doing when it happens. And it only happens with that icon. It's not a big deal since everything else is fine, but it's been bugging me. Any ideas?

do you have multiple user accounts that you logon with??
does anyone else use the computer?

have you run virus/malware scans lately?

I'm the only user. I run spyware and virus scans every day. I also have McAfee antivirus and Zone Alarm firewall running in the background.

I know you said there is no pattern, but try looking closer. note what you have done just before it disapears.

Unfortunately I have NO ideas here....
I have never heard nor seen a problem like that before!
