Hello, I am a Windows Vista user and i am very incompetent in all those things. So my story began about 4 months ago, when i started to use public WiFi instead of my LAN. I have had my LAN connection for about 6 years, back to then i had other computer and other operating system. Month ago there was no public wifi connection anymore so i had to return back to my LAN, which appeared not to work. When i did Vista network diagnostics i got following message:

Windows confirmed that "primary DNS Server" is currently online, but is not responding to
connection attempts at this time.

This usually means that a firewall is running somewhere between two computers and is blocking "domain".
Windows has confirmed that Windows firewall on this computer is correctly configured to allow this connection.
However, a remote firewall might be blocking your connection.

The following policy might need to be adjusted to allow windows to connect:
Policy provides: Windows firewall
Filter name: Query user
If the policy provider identified is windows firewall, click for information about adjusting windows firewall
settings. If a different policy provider has been identified, check the providers documentation
on how to adjust the policy settings.

I have been googling around and trying few things, only result was, that once i was able to go connect for few minutes when i unplugged my power adapter and replugged it, but after few minutes it was gone again.

Now like month ago, i reinstalled my windows vista, and after that i had problems with my drivers, i downloaded Driver detective, which shows that there are problems with my network adapter, but in device manager it seems to be OK.

I am using a bridge connection ( modem is: zyxel prestige 941 ) and my computer is Samsung np-r510h( laptop ). I am curently not sure what else should i add here, but i am frustrated from those issues, so i would be very thankful if i can get it all fixed.

Welcome to TSF,

Have you tried another computer, plug it in to your Modem and see if you're able to replicate the issue?

Do you have any Firewall or Security Software installed?

Do you have the latest SP for your Vista which is SP2?

Please post an ipconfig /all:
Click on Start => in run or search box type cmd, press enter. Open up a command prompt, run as an Admin then Copy and Paste these ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt . Please attach the .txt file to be found in your Local Disk 'C' on your next post.

No i havent plugged another computer in my network, i will do it later today, and let you know if it worked.

After the windows reinstalling, i have downloaded Avast antivirus, and im having firewall since i installed windows. Before the windows reinstall i had maccaffee and had kaspersky trial version.

I now did install Vista SP2 and when i plugged the modem into power and my cmp, it first of all went its usual way, showing connection local only, but then it showed up as multiple network and finaly connected to the right network and worked for few minutes.

Edit// I told you about, how it is switching from one network to other, i tried to replug it again. There are two options: it goes to Network named "Network" which from the beginning shows as local only and has no connection, or sometimes goes to "Network2" or switched from "Network" to "Network2" which has access to local and internet. But in few minutes "Network2" goes to local only aswell.

Please see the following recommendation to troubleshoot and possibly resolve your issue compiled by etaf:

Atheros AR5007EG & AR5007
We have recently been seeing a lot of problems with the above adapter over the last few months, mainly concerning WPA and WPA2 encryption and windows Vista.

The adapter gets an IP configuration, and shows as connected, but communication is non-existent or sporadic.

Log into the Router and disable the wireless security and see if you are now able to connect to the internet and surf OK.
--- Please post back here if that
works or does not work.

Here are a number of possible solutions

--- 1) In Device Manager right click on the wireless adapter and "update driver." That apparently has worked for some posters.

--- 2) Download and install the latest wireless driver from your laptop manufacturer's web site support section, as some manufactures, appear to now have a working driver available.
Toshiba - update has worked for some PCs
HP The latest HP Atheros driver dated Sept 2010 has fixed the issue - so check the driver date, However, that does NOT apply to all HPs / Compaqs machines
- the poster did an online scan for driver updates on the HP website here HP Product Detection which resulted in a solution.

If you can post the Make and EXACT model of your PC here, along with the windows version you have and we will see if we can find the driver and will post a link as a reply here.

--- 3) On one occasion re-setting the router back to factory default and re-configuring the router settings has resolved the issue

--- 4) A few posters here with the same issue have found that the driver from this site ATHEROS drivers for Microsoft Windows resolved the issue

I do NOT know anything about the site mentioned ATHEROS drivers for Microsoft Windows

However, if you do decide to try the driver, Please let us know the outcome

Direct link to the drivers are below
You only need to click on the green download button labelled " click to download " and wait, the file will download - you do not need to click on any other buttons to get the download started

AR5007
Vista 32 Bit
Drivers for Atheros AR5007 and Windows Vista
Although this driver has shown up in BSODs (Blue Screen Of Death) on Vista SP2 systems, usually conflicting with updated Vista OS drivers like netio.sys, tcpip.sys and other networking related drivers.

AR5007EG
Vista 32 Bit
Drivers for Atheros AR5007EG and Windows Vista

Assuming that after all the above the wireless still does not connect to the internet, all I can suggest is to use wireless security of WEP or to get an external USB wireless card.

You might also bug your laptop's tech support about the problem--maybe people can put pressure on Atheros to find a fix.

Sorry if my text was not understandable, it because of my poor english. The point is, the problem appears on LAN connection not Wifi( i am not WiFi user, i told you how i was using public Wifi before the problems started).
I am using a bridge connection ( modem is: zyxel prestige 941 ) and my computer is Samsung np-r510h. And windows is Vista Home premium Service pack 2. I today found out i had optional updates on my LAN Network adapter, so i upgraded it and after that i was able to use connection for almost 10 minutes which is for the longest in past months.

Yes, it was confusing...and thanks for the clarification.

If the driver update didn't help at all, next thing to do is replace your Network Adapter as they are very reasonable nowadays.

I don't remember a mention of this if it has been done.

You don't want to try changing the Network Adapter first?

I didnt mention before, that the computer is not mine. So The persons whose it is called the professionals out, who just showed up and changed the modem ( I wasnt there at this time)
So the network worked fine for 2 days, but then it lost the connection so i made reset for the modem. But soon it was gone again, saying: (connection access: local only) so then i unplugged the powercard and i think at this point, it created a new connection again, cause it was named "network2" at first, but now it is "network3". for few time at first after unplugging the powercard it went from one connection to other losing the access to internet. Now when i conenct, it stays as "network3" and has no connection to internet.
The networtk diagnostics say : the network adapter "local area connection" does not have a valid ip configuration.

If the Network Card can be reseated, pls. try removing it then put in a diff PCI slot. If it doesn't apply to you, obviously there's no need to proceed.

Also, uninstall the network adapter from Device Manager, restart the computer and see if your Windows will reinstall the driver. It's also good if you have the network adapter ready just in case.

If above suggestions didn't work please try the following:
Click on Start=> All Programs => Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log press enter
Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log press enter
Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog press enter

Restart the computer after.

=======================
Test the connection after, if it's still NO GO...assign Static IP, final one...replace your network adapter.

Please post your progress.
