hey im running a windows xp HP pavilion dv6000. it connected to the internet fine till i went off for a few months and left it with my g/f and now it connects trough IE just fine but none of the messangers will connect. i tried and downloaded AVG 7.5 and it runs but the updater wont connect to the server and i downloaded spybot and adaware and neither of them want to connect to the server either. i dont want to reformat cus i dont have the cds to this laptop so all the drivers for all the little features i dont know if i will get them back. all i have is an xp pro cd. i dont know if i may have oerlooked a configuration error on my internet but then IE wouldnt work would it. and im also thinking it may be a virus, worm, spyware, malware, due to that i had a slight similar problem on my old pc but it was 98 and running ad-aware fixed it but i dont have any updated definitions for any of the programs. i would like to know where else i can go and what else i can do cus im all out of ideas.

please help and thanks.

hello & welcome to TSF,

first i would like you see if you can go here ( http://www.pandasecurity.com)

once there look for ( active scan ) and see if you can download it to run a scan with it, it downloads the updates as it installs the program , you will have to download an active-x and give a valid e-mail

it will tell you if your system is in fact infected & fix a few things it finds for free

stand strong for this scan can take upwards of 2 hrs depending on your connection and the size of your harddrive

once loaded you will want to select your harddrive to be scaned

get back to us with the results

got to the site and and loaded fine but when it asks to download active x is where the problem is.... it trys then just stops and shuts the install down. i manually installed the def file for adaware computer runs fastr but same problem. im thinking it could just be a malware file... or i might be looking at some serious problems here.

@mike: Hey hows it going, just lookin for some cases.

@seraphimkid: This might be a trojan but I am going to try some things before I let you get transferred.

Goto

  • Start
  • Run
  • Type in cmd and click ok

When there type in this command:

netsh winsock reset catalog

Then restart your computer and try the internet once again. Afterwards follow this security speech I created if it still does not work.

It has come to my attention that you show the symptoms of a malware issue. I and this forum are not specifically trained in the removal of malware so I will now teach you the steps to transfer your case to the Hijackthis Log Help Forum. Follow the steps in this link: (Updated!) IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting A Log and post your results in the Hijackthis Log Help Forum. Follow the steps to the best of your ability and if you have an issue with one of the steps then include information on it with your new topic. Please give time as our analysts are very busy working with cases and other forum things.

cool thanks well i have tried it and it dont seem to work either... its not the internet itself it works fine through my browser IE.... but adaware, avg, firefox, and now the new IE that updated dosent connect. there is internet cus im usuing the router and my computer.. the laptop has a connection and is sending and recieving but its not acknowlading that its there. i heard some viruses and malware like to hide in the restore file and i was wondering how i could clear that or if i can cus it wont work cus the computer was actually stuck on jan 1 2006 after i got it back so everything got screwed up.
plus if maybe someone could give me a list of commands i could do on CMD to reset my internet or even fix my internet config till so i can rule that out and pin it down to a virus or something.

hello again,

okay it is starting to sound like you have been hijacked or infected with maleware that is messing with your internet settings

so see if you can go to majorgeeks ( the link in the lowerpart of my signature, when thereyou will be on the main page , to the left will be some subcatagories , you will be looking for intenet, in there is a program that will rebuild your winsock back to default, easier then doing it your self !!!

also check to see where your home page is set to for it may have been changed by a hijacker

i live in the states in Michigan so we might have a time diff, prob but i will work with you til we get this fixed

okay now the restore problem you have is a virus /trojan/maleware issue to wich has an easy fir but we have to get where you can download properly for you will need to download from (microsoft ) to fix it , what dose it say when you try to use it ??

by fixin the intenet problem so that you can download updates for you protection so that we can fid the culprits

ok the mircsoft thing just appears and shuts off. and i ran that winsock program. and it didnt solve that problem unless i downloaded the wrong one.
now ill be going off to work here in 30 mins on a work related trip and wont be back till sunday. but so far i an unable to connect through anything now on the laptop... it made and automatic update to IE 7 and now that wont work. it conects fine and the router recognizes it and the computer recgognizes it aswell. the connect to 192.168.1.1 (lynksys) keeps poping up on start ups and no other computer does that in the house. so due to that fact i amn having to put downloads all to my external harddrive and switch over and place them on that laptop. slow process but thats all i have to work with now.
ha this would all be easy if damn HP would of givin me a cd so i can just format and start from scratch.
but yes i am aware now that i have malware and hijackers and possibly a virus here and there. so unless i get this internet up i cnat run anything or is there a way
Thanks so much for the time.

okay ,

the problem seams to be progressing as we try to fix things !!!

so , question ,

do you have the windows installation cd for your other pc ( the one you are useing to talk with us ??

if you do what type is it ,

did it come with the pc ?
is it windows xp ?
is it an OEM version ?

if so you can use to reformat your laptop, you juat need to enter the product key from your lable off of the laptop

also you can contack the manufacture of the laptop and request the compleat cd software set to reformat the laptop to factory setting , they may want a $30 fee & normally you will have them in 3 days , i have had to do this for some clients & it will give you the backup cd's that you are in despret need of

also have you checked your routers settings ?
also what type of firewall are you useing ? for if you are useing an aftermaket like zone alarm , some one may have put restrictions on what may & may not connect to the internet

we are now wandering off into deeper issues

the contack info for you laptop is (http://hp.com/support)

i will check on your system real quick
be right back

hello ,

why dont you start your antivirus , do updates for all your protection, then do scans while in safe mode /it it is recommended to remove viruses /spyware /maleware in safe mode anyways !!!

it is a much slower process but at least you will find out what infection your pc has

also you need to go to hp an put info in about your system and zip code and they will give you a price on you compleat system restore cd's !!! they just want to kow if it is Home or Professional

the link is in one of the post above to the drivers / software updates, just scroll thru the updates and you will find the link for the cd's !!

tried it all seems fine. but i noticed after running back inforth to safe mode evertime it kicked out the lapop then didnt boot at all and its really hot. waited a few mins to let cool don then booted back up ran fine. when back to safe mode and notice that it sounded like it was working way harder than it needed to in safe mode. like it was majorly ovr clocked. so the tempature saftey progam keeps cutting it off cus its getting pretty quick and way past the 125C coreslowdown temp. i got everything updated now and but the abtivirus program is taking for ever to load the def. and it wont do it cus it heats up and shuts down. what could be causing this.

It has come to my attention that you might have a heat or voltage issue with your computer. We can not assume that it is one of these so we will go ahead and check. I would like you to download and install the program Speedfan. When you are done installing Speedfan open and look for 3 columns. One should have temperatures, the other should have voltages, and the last one should contain your fan speeds. When you have found this information please post to me in a column such as this: (Example)

Temperatures

Temp1: 30 C
Temp2: 60 C
HD0: 44 C

Voltages (only for desktops)

5.5V: 5.5
3.33V: 3.24

Fan Speeds

Speed1: 2480 RPM

(Remember this is just an example, please post your exact information)
If you are running on a Dell Laptop please follow these steps then post your temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds:

  • Open Speedfan
  • Click Configure on the Main Screen
  • Go to the Options Tab
  • Check the: "Enable DELL Support (use this function only on DELL notebooks)" check box
  • Click Ok then Close Speedfan
  • Start Speedfan once again

Then post your temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds.

Do this while the computer is under load and when it is idle, I will need to see those temps, voltages, and fan speeds

ok all i got out of it was the temps.
HD0 51C
Temp1 73C
Core1 66C
Core2 92C
Ambient 0C

no voltages cus it is a laptop and not showing me anything for fan speeds.

but this over heating problem is on when i run in safemode. like safemode is causing it a huge load which really boggels my mind.

hello ,

those are a little high & that is not good

now when you check those temps again i want you to check once with the battery in with no elect & once with the battery out

you may have a bad connector for the power input to the motherboard

if so you are looking at some $$$ to fix it but we are still trouble shooting

now that another has joined maybe we will have some fresh input

yes this is got me confused also

also check to see if your xp version is 32bit or 64bit it should tell you on the cd case some where for i do know that your laptop is set up for 32bit from the factory

running 64bit software on a system built for 32bit could be a factor, it would run good for a moment but as soon as you would put a load on the system , instant overheating , safty features kick in and shut down !!!

this is just a th

disregaurd this one ( confusion ) on my part , related to another post , just so similar but yet not !!!!!!!!!
