connecting to HP printer from laptop running Xp

My laptop connects to my HP officejet series 6010 via my desktop also running XP. I lost the connection from my laptop to the printer and can't get any printing done. The desktop is still connecting and I can print from it. My wireless is always turned off and my two computers connect through AT& T 2wire modem. This just started yesterday and I've checked all telephone and electrical connections which are functioning properly. My control panel shows the HP officejet 6100s series is my default printer but nothing activates the printer. It's got to be something simple because one minute it functioned and the next it didn't.
