I then installed my netgear wg311v3 PCI card driver from the installation cd and tryed to connect to the web. It says i am connected to my network however i cant access the web. I get an unusual ip address it used to 192.168.6 or something. I am with talktalk and they have been fine up until now. I am running xp sp1 an old installtion from 2001 or 2002 its OEM. My other networked pcs work fine. When i plugged this the problematic computer in through its ethernet port it worked fine i could access internet. Could it be the xp wireless configurater conflicting with netgears own. I have set it up to use windows configurater rather than netgears because i dont like the pop up i get each time it starts. I have a few pc's and laptops that work fine with the wg311v2 usb wireless thing. I tryed using a wg311v2 with the broke pc and i cant seem to install the driver.

sorry for the wordy explanation. basically the problem is the i cant access the web. I dont get the usual network ip adress. i run sp1 xp. It works when plugged in with an ethernet. Other pc's and xboxs work.

Thanks jack

You need at least SP2 to use WPA encryption, which I suspect is what is happening here. Why are you running SP1 when SP3 has been out for some time?

Yep, I'm sure that machine has a CD, so you can use that. Or, even easier, use a USB FLASH drive to transfer the package over.

Why not just disable encryption on the router long enough to download the updates?
