Hi!

We are installing a sever into our network which upto now consisted of 4 pc in a peer to peer network, all going into a wireless broadband router/hub. Everything working.

Im now adding a server into the network and have an addition 16 port switch so have configured it as:

WIRELESSLESS ROUTER ---> 16 PORT SWITCH --->all computers and server

The wireless router previous dished out IP addresses and bits and bobs, but it seems that the server would now prefare to do this as im having trouble connecting client computers to the server with a message mentioning DNS issues.

DOes the server HAVE to dish out the IP's and internet? we have several wireless laptops which we use - if the server was dishing out IP - surely these laptops will stop working?

or am i just muddled up?

will the wireless hub still dish out the internet over the wireless if the server is dishing out ips to the networked (wired) computers?

I hope i have made sense, im struggling to get my head round it!

Many thanks for any advice at all or pointers!!1

ok well a couple of your questions you may want to rephrase they didn't make much sense but i think i understand what your struggling with mostly and the for sure answer to your question above is yes all( to my knowledge) wireless routers send internet connections both through the plug-ins located on the router and(if it is a wireless router) a wireless internet signal

your problem may be that the computers cannot connect because the wirelss router has setup(or you have) a WEP encryption code or some sort of password you may have this but if you don't you could find out how to get it by reading the routers manual or setting up a new wireless connection if you need any help you can just post back on this thread or email me i would be happy to help good luck!

Rivercottage,

No, you do not HAVE to have the server act as the DHCP server (handing out IP addresses to the network) - but, networks generally run a bit smoother when the server handles it.

You can set this up a couple different ways. Shooting for simple, I've set up a similar network like this:

Server acts as DHCP server
Wireless router does NOT act as DHCP server
--change settings in router to act as *router* and not *gateway*
--setup the wireless access on the router to require MAC address authentication and to use WAP encryption

Your laptops will still pickup an IP that is assigned from the server, just broadcasted thru the router.

Clear as mud, eh? I know, it can be a pita at first, but once you get it up and running, you'll feel pretty good about yourself. Good luck, and keep us advised as to how you are doing. thanks!
