Hi,
At the weekend i was staying at my grandparents and needed internet access, so i wired my laptop up to the phone line and tryed to connect. I fidelled around for a while and gave up.
Back home i sat down and connected to my wireless network, i opened firefox (which installed while away) and it wouldnt connect. I then tryed outlook and that wouldnt connect either but said it was connecting using 'Local area connection' i have looked for ways of fixing it but with no avail. I use xp media edition.
Any ideas???

Wired it to the phone line? If you connected an Ethernet NIC directly to a phone line, you probably have a dead NIC!

If that's not what happened, we'll need more details of the exact situation.

I connected it to the phone line yes.

Well, if you connected an Ethernet card directly to a POTS (analog) phone line, it's very likely you killed it. No further details are necessary, start shopping for a replacement NIC. Since this is a laptop, you'll probably have to use a PCMCIA Ethernet adapter to connect now.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Why is routing enabled here? I only see one NIC, the wireless one.


Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.

1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

The was an X on the etherenet one, but not on the wireless one.
I enabled it and restarted it but still nothing...
