on the 20th i turned my PC on i had been playing left 4 dead 2

and minecraft, the latter of which needing an update, and i

think dungeon defenders and frozen synapse had updated

themselves through steam, i then turned it off. when i came

back to it a few hours later it finished loaded windows but

before it came up with the accout login screen it blue

screened. the computer then automatically re-started and

launched startup repair, which failed. i then tried rebooting

pressing F8 did the startup repair manually, this time writing

down the details:
Problem Event name: startup repair V2
Problem signature 1: Manual repair

Problem signature 3: 0

Problem signature 5: unknown
Problem signature 6: OS version mismatch
Problem signature 7: 0
Problem signature 8: 0
Problem signature 9: unkown
Problem signature 10: 1168
OS version: 6.0.6001.
Locale ID: 1033

after trying this a few times and getting now joy i tried to

boot from last known good configuration, which led to the same

result- the blue screen at the same point. i have been able to

get in via safe mode and tried a system restore to the 17th,

which while it did complete the system restore, did nothing to

help the problem. i then tried not telling the system to

automatically reboot on crashing and wrote down what was on

the blue screen:

Technical info:
*** STOP: 0x00000074

upon a recomendation from a friend i then tried to re-install

my graphics driver as he had a similar problem, however, i

think because i am in safe mode, the driver is not able to

since being able to get on in safe mode i have also noticed an

error report on my desktop called: hs_err_pid1268 containing

this information, which i thought might be relevant:

Hi and welcome to TSF this is about your error code
The BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO bug check has a value of 0x00000074. This bug check indicates that there is an error in the registry.

The following parameters appear on the blue screen.

Parameter Description
1 Reserved
2 Reserved
3 Reserved
4 The NT status code (if it is available)

The BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO bug check occurs if the SYSTEM hive is corrupt. However, this corruption is unlikely, because the boot loader, known as NT Loader (NTLDR) in versions of Windows prior to Vista, checks a hive for corruption when it loads the hive.

This bug check can also occur if some critical registry keys and values are missing. Thee keys and values might be missing if a user manually edited the registry.

Resolving the Problem
Try restarting the computer by selecting "last known good configuration" in the boot options.

If the restart does not fix the problem, the registry damage is too extensive. You must reinstall the OS or use the Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) that you previously created by using the Windows Backup tool.

i have tried last known good configuration and, while windows did start it then immediatly blue screened again. so i guess i'm going to need to reinstall the OS.

That would probably be the better course remember to get your drivers from the makers support site

41,122 Posts
Since you can boot into Safe Mode, have you tried to do a System Restore to a time before this happened? Or try to uninstall any updates and drivers you installed before this happened. If you get the Startup Repair, if that fails it should give you the RE (Recovery Environment) and you can choose System Restore and if that fails, Command Prompt. Here type chkdsk C: /R and press enter. Check Disk will try and fix any file problems.
Then if all else fails, reinstall.
