First off i would like to say hello all, and im kind of new to this forum.

But heres my situation, So my story is that i was trying to fix my cd drives and i was unpluging the plugs from my power supply that goes into the hard drives / cd roms, and after i gave up i tryd just leaving things as they were. At the end no matter what i do to try and fix around the plugs the computer won't start up correctly, as in when i turn it on my monitor just keeps flashing and nothing detects. I bought a new cd drive to see if that was the problem but now im wondering did i fry my hard drive or anything? Thanks for reading and please try and help me!

1. When you unplugged the power connector to your drives, was the computer turned off?
2. Have you checked that the power connector is firmly plugged back into your hard drives, as well as the data cable?
3. Do you know if you are using SATA or IDE drives?
4. What happens when you push the power button on the front of the case? Do any lights come on, can you hear a fan, see a light on the motherboard?

I was able to actually get the booting working but now i have this pop up going on "Reboot and Select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key_ "

That last message means that it is not detecting your HDD. Do you have IDE (EIDE/ATA/PATA) drives or SATA (see attached). If you have IDE CD rom drive, is it on the same gray cable as the HDD? Is the gray IDE cable plugged tightly into the drive, and to the motherboard? When you swapped out the CD drive, did you change the jumper pin setting to match your old CD drive? Are all of the White molex power plugs plugged in tightly. When you start your computer does you CD rom drive light up, can you eject the tray? Try Booting into Setup (Bios) and make sure that your HDD is being detected and your CD rom drive. If you can post a picture of the inside of your computer that would be helpful.

When you turn the computer on, go into your Setup screen. Usually by pressing the Delete key or F2, it should tell you on screen to *Press XYZ to Enter Setup* when you first power on. You should see a section in Setup identifying any drives installed in your computer, make sure your hard drive is listed. If it is, look for a heading called BOOT or BOOT SEQUENCE. Make sure your hard drive is selected as the first boot device (or the 2nd boot device if your CD is listed first).

I have the ATA Drivers, and i rechecked if everything was pluged in tightly and when i swapped out my old one i did replug in the originals to the new one , and i am able to eject the cd drive and it glows ups, and i currently can't not find a camera atm. :mblah:

Did you check your boot order as I suggested in my previous post??

It looks as though you have an IBM Deskstar set as the Master hard drive and your cd rom is connected to your data cable as a slave. If the CD-ROM is a new drive, make sure you set the jumper on the back of the drive to SL for slave and not MA for master. This is also assuming you didn't remove the data cable from the motherboard and incorrectly reverse it.

When i go to my set up to check the boot order i get this page where it shows
Ht Frequency Auto
Amd C&Q Enabled
APIC Mode Enabled
1st Boot device HDT722516DLAT70
2nd Boot Device ASUS DVD-E818a4
3rd Boot Device 1st FLOPPY DRIVE
Boot Other Device Yes
Boot Up NumLock Status On
DisplayLogo Enabled

If thats the correct page i'm on, and as you told me to check the Master plugs and etc i fixed that also, i made the cd drive to the slave and the hard drive as the master. But im still not sure about the whole reverse from the mother board thing.

OK, that order is correct.

Looking at your picture, there is a wide ribbon cable that goes from your motherboard to your hard drive, then DVD drive. Did you disconnect that cable from the motherboard when you were re-arranging wires?

I would put a couple fingers on top of the hard drive and press the power button. Can you feel the drive spin up?

If it still doesn't boot up to the hard drive, power off and disconnect the power cable and ribbon cable from the DVD drive, then turn the power on again.

One more thing if it helps to inform , when i put in a reformat disc it pops up to a "Inspecting your computer hard drive " and then goes to a black screen and stays like that for awhile and nothing happens.

It's going to be easier to help you if you let me know the outcome of any suggestions provided. I can't rule something out if I don't know if you've tried it.

If you disconnect the power and ribbon cable from the DVD drive and power on the computer, I can rule out any conflicts with the drive or incorrect slave/master configuration.

Just for testing, remove the power connector and ribbon cable from the DVD drive. Let me know what color the connector is at the end of the cable going to the DVD. It should be blue, black or gray.

What is a reformat disc? Is that a Windows installation disc?

For testing , i've done what you have asked and the color that came out of the DVD driver was Grey, The Black colored one is in my Hard drive while the blue colored one is conected to my mother board. Also after taking out all of the plugs from the dvd driver , the same pop up keeps showing "Reboot and select proper boot device..."

Reformat is a window's installation disc, sorry for the misunderstanding. I've reinstalled window's into the hard drive thinking it would do some good but after every thing the problem still continues :sigh:

So, you were able to completely install Windows just now?

Look at your hard drive and the diagram below. There are 4 rows of pins between the power connector and the ribbon cable. Look at your hard drive and tell me where the white jumper is set using the pin numbering I have here. You should have 2 white jumpers on pins 3&4 and 7&8.

I was able to install windows , but after the completion / reboot the problem still continues. and my white jumpers i believe would be only on 1and2, i took a picture of how the back of my hard drive is and how it is and how i've been using it i hope it answers your question!

If you never touched the jumpers on the hard drive, the ribbon cable looks to be in the correct order... The only other things I can think of are choosing to Load Default Settings in Bios, or disabling the Display Logo option and when you restart, then press the pause button and take a picture of your screen when it displays your hardware.

You can browse through your Bios setup screen and see if there are any other menus for Boot Order or Sequence and make sure your hard drive is 1st....

I doubt the cable is bad if Bios sees your drive and Windows installed from your CD/DVD drive. Hard drive should be ok if you completed a Windows installation.

You could try changing the jumpers on the hard drive to Device 0 Master, completely disconnect the CD/DVD and try both ends of the ribbon cable on the hard drive and see if it boots.

On some systems you can press F8, F10 or F12 to get to a boot menu where you select the device you'd like to boot to. Try it and select your hard drive if there's an option for it.

Anyone else is welcome to jump in if you see something I've missed!
