I am using an emachines M8605 laptop with Windows XP 64-bit. Now my computer freezes everytime I unplug the powercord. Also, it completely pauses and shuts off the hard disks after 3 minutes or so of inactivity, and I have to use the mouse or keyboard to make it start again. The computer wont shut down properly, but in safe mode none of these problems exist. It shuts down, stays running no matter how long im away, and the power cord can be taken out at will. Can anyone give me some insight as to what might be the problem? Thanks.

Windows not shutting down could be casued by a program that just wont give up and turn off when shutting down. But the program never loads in safe mode. Do you happen to have any norton utilites that run in the background?

all of this is great advice except for two things. I currently have the never turn off hard disks option enabled in my power settings...and it doesnt pay attention to it. The second is there arnt really any programs I can remove because I just reformatted my computer when this happen..it was only the programs that came with windows xp 64.

I went through and disabled all my services in msconfig and found out that if I disable the one called "DCOM Server Process Launcher" it doesnt freeze when I leave it idle. However when I disable that my taskbar is gone. How can I replace this, or is it possible? My laptop still freezes though when I unplug the powercord or close the lid, and I have already disabled that setting in the desktop settings to go on standby when the lid is shut.

Have you checked your windows logs?

- Right click on my computer>manage
- Expand the Event Viewer and note any Red X Circles that were logged when this happens, check all 3 places (applications, security and system).
- Post the event # and the source
