At startup my Compaq 7500 running XP take ages to startup. Using Task Manager you can see a huge number of processes have been started up. Currently running Macafee Security, have run CCleaner and have log from Hijackthis but do not know what to remove if anything.

Hello dwjambo,

Please download the self-extracting version of HijackThis from here:

HijackThis Installer Download

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.

Double-click the file then click the Install button.

The file will be extracted to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
A shortcut for future use will also be created on your desktop and the Intro Frame of HijackThis will open.

Click Do a system scan and save a log file. Copy the entire contents of that log and post it here by clicking the Add Reply button.

Hello dwjambo,

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)6 Update 3...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Hello dwjambo,

Those are harmless tracking cookies, nothing to worry about.

Your HJT log looks clean, would you like to disable some non-essential startup items to improve performance?

Yes - I would also like your view on whether MacAfee could be the issue as I'm pretty certain that the degradation in performance began around the time I installed this earlier in the year.

Hello dwjambo,

To be completely honest with you, McAfee is kind of bloated now, and isn't quite what it used to be. There are some much less system intensive anti-virus programs like AVG and NOD32 that are both free and provide a good amount of protection, as well.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Smapp] C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\Smtray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Portfolio] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WksSb.exe /AllUsers
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Then reboot your computer and see how it runs.

Thanks for all your help I have completed all the tasks you have suggested and have remove MacAfee and replaced it with AVG.

I will give it a few days and see how it goes.

Once again many thanks.
