Hi all

nightowlpart -- definitely follow the recommendations to scan for malware, that's always a good step with unpredictable system behavior.

Quick Fix Try -- if it happens that this problem just started recently, you have the option to try using Windows Me's System Restore utility to help. You can find it on your Start Menus by navigating to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore. Choose a restore date from prior to the restart trouble. Make sure to scan thoroughly for malware again, though, as pests can hide in older restore points.

Should you still have the problem with a completely clean system, and System Restore does not help, have a try with the TroubleShooter over at aumha.org -- it's very thorough --- http://www.aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm

Best of luck & as it's just about that season = Happy Holidays

I'm sorry but i'm having the same problem, i'm running Vista and my computer just wont shutdown...and like the person that made this thread, how they used hibernation, well that wont even work. Its not a virus, because currently, I am running and advanced Version of Nortins AntiVirus and yes i keep it up to date as well as everything else in my computer.

As for components the only thing that may be needed to know is that I'm using a GeForce6100SM-M, so yes that means i'm using nVIDIA software..(I've heard that this could be the problem "The helper thing that is involved with it*)

Hi dog199200

. . . and Welcome to the Tech Support Forums.

Could you open a new thread for your question over in the Vista forums? Thanks! (It's more polite to open your own thread, because members often receive emails for their threads, & we don't want to flood their inboxes with other members repairs).

In the meantime, though, make sure that Vista isn't set to automatically restart on error. Go to Start - Control Panel - System and Maintenance - System - Advanced System Settings - Settings - Startup & Recovery - uncheck the box "automatically restart" & then click OK. This should let you view the error that is likely occurring as you system attempts to shutdown.

You can also view these and other possible errors using Event Viewer. The fast way: right-click on "Computer" in the Start Menu, and select "Manage" - then select Event Viewer from the list of tools. For an indepth look at using Vista's Event Viewer, see this article --- http://www.petri.co.il/vista-event-viewer.htm --- Event Viewer is a handy tool for tracking such errors as yours, which can be due to many different causes.

Best of luck!
