Hello, again.

When I click on 'my computer' and check the contents I see: Local Disk (C:) C Drive, Floppy Disk Drive (A:), DVD/CD-RW Drive (D:) -- and also CD drive (E:) through (Z:). There are a total of 22 of this new disk drives and I have no idea where they came from.

Whenever I click on one I get the message 'please insert a disk into CD drive...' Again, I have no idea where these drives came from. I can't remember when this started. I recognized the problem when I tried to connect my phone to my computer via USB cable and the usual prompts didn't show up. When I checked My Computer I saw the multiple drives. Now my phone no longer syncs with my computer.

Any idea on how to fix this?

Did you ever have external CD/DVD drives plugged in? Maybe the "safely remove" option was not used.

Did you install software via DVD that was actually burned on another systems DVD drive?

Virtual drives is another thought.

How old id the hardware in the system - i.e., XP-era, Vista, etc...?

I have a similar problem. I have an E: drive and I want to delete it and the files on it but it tells me I do not have permission to delete. I have administrator privileges on the computer but I cannot delete the drive or the files. Please give me advice.

Please get us a screenshot of Disk Management - make sure the screen is maximized.

Upload the screenshot to your next post.

START | type diskmgmt.msc

Hi, good point from Wrench, though even with daemon or alcohol you would usually get duplicates of the dvd\cd RW drive (D)(not a generic cd drive.. still stranger things have happened) and never so many. I wonder if these are "Phantom" devices.

Go to start search and type devmgmt.msc device manager will open. Go to view and show hidden devices, do they show up at all?

If not open the System Properties, Advanced (Tab) and click on Environmental Variables. What you want is a New.. System Variable.

Variable name = DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices
Variable value = 1

Note:- Add to the System variables, and not the User variable section.
Here's a screen shot:-

Reboot, open devmgmt.msc (show hidden devices) and if there right click on each and select uninstall.

Hi, this is odd, I have never encounted this before, there are ways to disable drives in the registry however how you managed to create them baffles me. I suspect an autoruns reg problem caused by some third party program this is the default reg setting (will do no harm)

Copy and paste all below into notepad.... better still lets see what you now have:-

Go to start all programs accessories and right click on command prompt select
"run as administrator" at the prompt copy and paste the following .. press enter
post the notepad results here.

Code:
 regedit /e C:\Note.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\explorer" & start notepad C:\note.txt
