I would suggest downloading the hardrive manufacturer's diagnostic utility software from their website (on a floppy) and run a test on the drive.
If it checks out OK, try popping the battery out of the main-board for 30 minutes, then replace and restart (if the machine's old, it's worth fitting a new battery at the same time).
No doubt you have made sure all cables are secure and well home?
