While I was watching a educational dvd my computer locked up. Nothing worked. I had to shut the unit off at the main switch and the reboot.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem whatever it is and or prevent it from occuring again?

Hello: to start, look under Event Viewer for items hilighted with RED; click Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer and look under Application and also System.

Make notes of the information and report those.

Have you run any Windows Updates recently. If not then you may want to. I have a feeling it may fix it.

It could be anything (scratched DVD, bad DVD drive, loose cable, buggy MPEG-2 decoder, buggy Real Player, buggy display drivers, and probably more).
I think it'd be easier if you first tried to play the DVD in something other than Real Player. Real Player doesn't even have internal DVD playback capabilities (it just relies on external decoders) - and I don't like how it hijacks file associations for virtually all media files (and audio CD and movie DVD playback). Do you have another software DVD player? WinDVD, PowerDVD, whatever? Use it instead and report the results.
