Computer locks on all multimedia devices

I recently upgraded to a M825LR motherboard with an Athlon XP 2000 processor. Everything is working great except that when I open any multimedia program - Media Player, Winamp, Destiny, ect the computer locks as soon as the program loads. I have reinstalled all drivers, installed the newest DirectX, and also reinstalled Win 98 but the problem still exists. I have onboard sound - Avance AC '97, Nvidia Riva TNT 64 video card, and nothing more added. I know it has to be a driver that is common to all of the multimedia programs but I haven't found it yet. Anyone have any ideas. Thanks in advance - Patrick.

Which chipset? Could be the nasty old via problems that can happen :( Might wanna go get the newest 4 in 1's over at www.viaarena.com

or if its an Nforce board ... drivers from Nvidia.
I guess I need to add this - it has the VIA KM266 chipset and I installed the newest drivers that came out on this past Friday. Thanks - Patrick
Ok so we've probably ruled out drivers.. is there a BIOS update from the manufacturers website? it could be a BIOS issue ... and I read from the post, the sound is onboard and the video is an add in card (assuming AGP) correct? One thing you can try in the interim is resetting the BIOS to factory defaults and see if that helps any.. I know sometimes a flaky BIOS setting can cause all kinds of havoc..
