Computer keeps shutting down

1207 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  koala
Friends: I am running a Pentium 4 1.8GHz, 512 MB RAM with Windows XP. The computer works fine until I try to run an antivirus software or try to defrag the HDD. Then the computer shuts down without warning, only the power light on the front of the case and the NUM LOCK light on the keyboard stays on. It will not reboot normally. I have to remove all power, wait for 10 seconds for these lights to go off, only then can I reboot. Both cooling fans are clean and running well. There is no real overheating issue. The mobo is IBM P6 2001, chipset Intel FW82801BA. Event Viewer provides no clues. Any ideas how to fix this? Thank.

try a new power supply .. sounds like that ... or its a dieing harddrive..

to see if its your power disconnect any fans or lights that are not needed to run the pc and try doing a defrag or avg scan..

if that no work try doing a scan disk for errors at start up...
Enable SMART in the BIOS to get an early warning of any damage to the hard drive.

What make is the drive? Go to the manufacturer's website and download a diagnostics disk. This will find any errors and attempt to fix them.
