My computer feels a bit slow during use and after restarting. I have installed some software such as Visual Basics. I feel that some of its contents still exists. Additional I have found "Google update" that I never installed.

Please help me clean my computer and make it run fast. I would also like to twick it as well, if possible.

Thanks

Hello k2dragon,

Windows® does have a couple of built-in 'garbage cleaners'.

1: Right click > Internet Explorer Desktop Icon > Properties > Delete cookies > OK > Delete Files > Tick the box > Delete all offline content > OK ...now click the Content Tab > Clear SSL State > OK .

2: How to use the Windows® XP Disk CleanUp tool. ( Click the coloured link. )

These two utilities will help keep the HDD 'clean'...use them both regularly, as well as using The Disk Defragmenter once a week.
Both of them will only delete the unnecessary 'garbage', whereas other system cleaners can remove vital files.
I have got into the habit of using Method One every night as part of the shutdown process, and Method Two once a week.

3: Go Start > Run > type in the box msconfig > Enter.
This opens the System Configuration Utility > StartUp > list here are all the programs that are set to start with Windows®.
Untick those that you do not want to start with Windows > Apply > ok; the computer will want to reboot; allow it to do so.
If you are unsure which programs are safe to disable; post a list here and we will advise you.

Please Note: Do Not disable your Anti Virus or 'real time' Anti Spyware programs.

Upon restarting, a Pane will open stating that you have altered the StartUp Configuration; tick the box Don't show this message again, and you are right to go.

Try these 3 methods, then post back with the results.

Kind Regards,

Hello again k2dragon,

Tweaking the Registry is not recommended, as it can cause serious consequences to your system; to the extent, if done incorrectly, the alterations may not allow it to boot!

Speed and Performance of your system is not generally achieved by tweaking; its more to do with the CPU Speed and the amount of RAM installed.

Having said that, there is a utility that may be handy for you; its called TweakUI. (Click the coloured link.)

Please read these guides...

How to Install and Use Everest™ Home Edition. (Click the coloured link.)

Once installed, please follow the instructions to post your system specifications; please include the wattage output and make of the Power Supply as well.
(In particular the information shown in Figures 3: 4: & 5: of Everest™.)

How to post a screenshot.

We will then be able to analyse your Hardware and advise you how to improve the performance of your machine.

How many services are listed in the Startup Section of msconfig please?

Post back with this information.

Kind Regards,

Hi k2dragon,

I was not aware that this is a laptop, which puts a different aspect on things, which I am not totally au fait with; however, I will get a laptop guru to look in here and give an opinion.
With that said, I do know that these following items can be disabled in the startups.

  • qttask
  • WMPNSCFG
  • wcescomm
  • Adobe Reader
  • Google Updater

None of these are essential services that are needed to start with Windows, and disabling them will not affect their individual operation.
As for the Google™ UpDater, you can update your Google™ at any time manually, and Adobe® Reader does not need to start when Windows starts, it will still operate normally when a .pdf file is opened.

One other item that is an absolute pest is a Browser Help Object (BHO) called SSVHelperClass, this needs to be disabled in the Internet Options....
Open Internet Options > Programs > Manage Add-Ons.
I personally do not have any BHO's or Browser Extensions running at all, as all they do is hinder the operation of the computer, in my opinion.
Some of my colleagues may beg to differ with me on this score.

If you disable these you will notice a decisive increase in the 'speed' of your browsing; so give it a try and see for yourself.

Post back with the outcome.

Kind Regards,

Try the simple approach first,.. install that great freebie, "Process Explorer"
and when your PC shows signs of running slow, have a look via Process Explorer and that will show you instantly in real time just what is gobbling up your CPU usage,..if that identifys the offending culprit, then select, "kill process" and it should solve your problems in the short term before you can decide what ever further actions are required to rectify or remove the problem program.
