I bought 4 DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400 Ballistix ram sticks for my Dell XPS-420. I can only load 3 of them at a time. If i install the 4th the computer will not boot and makes a constant beeping sound. One long tone not a cyclical beep. Any help out there would be greatly appreciated. If I need to post more inof please let me know.

some motherboard dont like all four slots filled it is better to use 2 sticks. i.e 2x2GB in duel channel.

to test wether that stick of ram is faulty download memtest86 burn to disk and with one stick of ram installed boot from that disc. memtets will tets how good the ram is.

Beeping usually means the stick is not all the way inserted in the slot. The slot could be bad too. Do the Crucial System Scanner to see how much RAM your computer supports and the type. Also do as greenbrucelee said, and download the ISO image for memtest in my signature and burn the Image to CD using IMGBurn also in my signature. Boot off of the newly created CD and run the tests with the last stick of RAM in the computer, not the others, in the last slot you were using.
Also be aware that if you are running 32 bit (XP) OS that Windows will only recognize about 3.2 GB of RAM.

I was not very good at describing my situation. I am running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. I had all the ram slots filled with 1gb ram sticks prior to trying to install the 4 new sticks. I installed all four had the problem, swapped them around and had the problem still. I then started the computer with only 1 ram stick (4 times while swapping out Ram sticks). I then would add another and then another until i got to having 4 sticks installed. No matter which stick i had in the 4th slot it would fail so i thought okay, the slot is bad but when i reinstall the original 4 sticks all four slots worked fine.

Am i confusing anyone yet? I do appreciate any help.

Thanks

Ok, can you let us know what Crucial recommended for your board? If this solved the problem, don't forget to mark this thread Solved in the Thread Tools at the top.
