Computer boots... only to show mouse

Hello all...
I am a pretty smart guy when it comes to computers but this problem has stumped me...
When ever i turn on my computer it will boot, go to the windows xp booting screen then instead of taking me to a login screen it goes to a black screen and just the mouse... I have tryed un plugging all of the stuff out of the back of my computer that isn't needed i.e. video camera, usb cable, and then restarting only to go back to the same screen.
Now i have tryed to reinstall windows xp pro on the same computer, and when i do so the same error happens after the installation is complete. Now i know the simple solution would be to format the computer but i can't simpily do that. I NEED the stuff on my computer, I am a webmaster and CANNOT afford to loose anything. And yes i am an idiot for not backing up my computer but its to late now.
I hope there is someone out there that would be able to assist me. Thank you for your time.

When you say you "reinstalled" windows, was it a Repair Install or a Fresh Copy? Prior to this problem coming about, did you install any new hardware? Did you have up-to-date antivirus software installed and running?

My initial inclination is to try and rule out newly installed hardware conflicts/issues and a boot-sector virus.

I did a repair instalation and then did a fresh copy. also i did use norton (up-2-date) but then i just tryed reinstalling it again and it worked this time. Thank you for your support. My guess is it was a boot-sector virus too. Thanks

Glad things are working. If it was indeed a boot sector and you did not somehow blow out that, then it would still be in there. Watch for problems.
