Hi, I have a relative who's computer automatically shuts down after the Windows welcome screen. He doesn't have a usable computer currently, so I'm posting this for him. This problem started after his installation of Kaspersky (I've sent them an e-mail, but I end up getting answers which aren't relevant to the issue). Kaspersky ran a full scan, deleted some items and prompted him to restart. He restarts, but at this point, he can't log in. His computer starts up, and everything appears normal for the first part. But after the welcome screen, his computer automatically closes on him. He cannot boot into safe mode or boot from a CD (he's tried reformatting his drive using his Windows XP disk) as the same problem persists. I'm not entirely sure this topic would fall under "Motherboards, Bios & CPU", and if it doesn't, please let me know, or if possible, transfer it. Any help would be appreciated.

seeing as how he is willing to reformat his drive (probably the best idea in the end )

try booting into Killdisk (free) and wipe the drive ........... then you will be able to reload windows ...... thats a FOR SURE unless the hard drive is bad .......

you can also if you want to .... run the hard drive manufacturers diagnostic utility to verify the mechanical condition of the drive ....... these tests can be found at the hard drive manuf's website / downloads / free

Linderman:
I'm kind of confused about the "Killdisk" program. My relative is using a laptop, so he can't boot from a floppy. Also, he can't actually download anything onto his computer or even run any programs since he can't boot into windows. I may be missing a point, or may have misunderstood something. If that's the case please tell me.
Thanks

He can run kill disk from a cd if he enters the bios and selects cd as the first boot device
but someone will have to d/l and burn it to a disk for him.

YUP thats right

you can run bootable cd's they dont involve windows
