Hello, hopefully someone has some advice.

My fathers laptop had an issue the other day, took me a while but eventulary figured out that he had a faulty 1TB Hard Drive. I swapped it out for a 640 GB drive and now it works a dream (He doesn't mind the loss in space as he just surfs the web).

Rather than just throwing the 1T drive out I'm attempting to fully wipe the drive and hopefully get it to some sort of useable state (if that's even possible). I've got it plugged into my laptop via an external case and at the moment got HD Tune Pro doing a Zero Fill erase on the drive. It's now been running for 37 minutes and done around 12GB. It's stating that it's 1% complete and the speed is 5.2 MB/s.

I know that it would take a while to Zero a 1TB drive but is it normal to take this long?

Any other suggestions on how I could completely wipe (and possibly repair) the drive? Or should I just take a hammer to the darn thing!

The drive is a HGST 1TB 5400RPM.

Many thanks!

Thanks for your reply. I've just stopped the Zero fill as I worked out that at that speed it would take around 55 hours. There must be a different way.

The drive is not very old. I believe my father bought the laptop new around 18 months ago, possibly even earlier.

Crystal Disk displays the health status of the drive as "Bad":

What is the make of the HDD? To do a wipe, the software has to go through each sector by sector and check it. If the sector is bad, it marks this sector as such so that it won't be used to save data to in the future. If a sector is good, after marking it so, it writes a 0 to that sector. If the drive was failing as you say, then it is probably because it has a lot of bad sectors. The more bad sectors, the longer the wipe, or a full Format will take.
This may take overnight or longer. After it is done, the drive may be usable but I wouldn't trust it.
You can check the warranty of the drive with the manufacturer and if it's still under warranty RMA it back to them and they will send you a free Refurbished one in return.

Thank you for the information. The make is a HGST which looking online seems to be a subsidiary of Western Digital. I'll have a look at the warranty situation.

Just checked the warranty on the drive and it says:

"The drive is not valid for warranty through HGST. Please return product to your point of purchase."

So I can't go down the warranty route.

You can download HGST's Drive Fitness and burn the image to CD using IMGBurn or USB with Rufus all in my signature. Boot off of the newly created media, or if the drive is external, use Windows Drive Fitness and you can run the Long Diagnostic test on the drive. It checks for bad sectors and will take a long time. Or you can run the short test first. If either test fails the HDD needs to be replaced.
You can check the warranty here: https://www.hgst.com/portal/site/en/support/warranty/

I checked and there is no warranty left on the drive.

The drive is now external so I downloaded, installed and ran Windows Drive Fitness. After it scans for drives a popup box appears saying:

"Mass Storage Device USB is NOT supported."

Clicking OK shows no drives found.

The drive has failed, and is off to HDD Heaven.
For a second opinion, if the drive has a drive letter, you can open a Command Prompt as Admin and type the drive letter of the drive (eg) G: and press enter (eg) G:\> at this prompt type chkdsk /F. to check for Bad Sectors type chkdsk /R this will take a very long time.

Okay well many thanks for your help.

Hard drive is now smashed into little bits  poor little thing.

Again, I appreciate all of the help and a new drive is on my to-buy list.
