Was busy jauntin' along in an MMORPG this afternoon, when all of a sudden the tower shuts down - no warning or indication or windows message or anything popping up, just blamo - no power. At first I thought it was a power outage, but then I noticed that the monitor light was still on, as was the phone and answering machine on the desk...

I tried to power up again, but no go - so I unhooked everything in the back, unscrewed the side, and took a look around inside. Nothing seemed to be amiss, nothing looked fried or damaged, but I did take a can of compressed air and gave it a good blast on all fans and knocked out a fair amount of dust. I hadn't done that in about four or five months, since installing a new power supply.

I put everything back together and plugged everything in, and fired it up - and everything is back to normal. I guess my question is - is this a warning sign of something amiss with the power supply? Or could this be a sign of something entirely different?

Posting a DxDiag just in case - appreciate any insight or helpful info from you guys...

Hi,

Prime suspect in this case is HEAT. When there is enough dust in the heatsink fan area, the thing gets so hot it shuts down to prevent damage to the CPU. When you blew it out, the unit cooled and away we go again. If things seem to continue working O.K., don't make the same mistake again....keep that dust out of there, because it could eventually kill some parts if it gets thick enough and things get hot enough.

Post back if you have further problems.

I'm tending to think it was either the dust build up, which is now cleared, or that the PSU is wonky - which worries me a bit, since I just installed this PSU less than six months ago.

According to Everest, which I just checked when I started the computer up, my CPU is at 56 degrees celsius, and the motherboard and hard drive are at 38 degrees and 31 degrees respectively. Mind you, this is me just turning it on this morning about two hours ago and logging in here. What is the "danger zone" temperature for the CPU?

Voltages are reading as follows, according to Everest...

CPU Core - 1.65 V
+3.3 V - 3.36 V
+5 V - 5.05 V
+12 V - 11.61 V
-12 V - 1.71 V
+5 V Standby - 4.97 V
VBat Battery - 3.30 V

Don't know what any of it means, but there it is for ya.

As far as the CPU goes, how hot is too hot?

Also, your +12v is too low. What PSU do you have? Look on the side and post the info including the amps on the +12v. Also post the brand.

Make sure your HSF is spinning and it is blowing down on the CPU. Also, make sure you have a fan in the front blowing in and at least one fan in the back blowing out.

I'm not at home currently to actually look at the thing, but here is the PSU I put in over the summer...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817181110

I blew some dust out of all the fans - heat sink, video card, and rear - when I opened the case yesterday, and the fans were all cleared and checked before I plugged everything back in.

I don't have a fan in the front - this tower isn't engineered that way - there's a rear fan, and side vents, but the optical drives, USB ports, floppy drive, and card readers are in the front. The hard drive is mounted vertically at the front base as well - strange, indeed, but this is how HP rigged it up. So no room for a front fan. Here is the manufacturer's site product info...

I have looked in on Everest every now and then, and have seen temperatures higher than the 58 celsius I posted about earlier today...but have not seen a performance hit on any applications or games. According to the following link another person sent me, I'm in a safe zone for this processor (AMD XP 3000)...they have the danger zone at 85 degrees?

Have not had time to check out Sensor View, which another person recommended - will take a looksie at it when I'm back home...

You need a better PSU, no doubt. Check Sensors view anyway to compare and get an average idea of readings. 80C is high heat production. You should be lower than 60C at least under standard load.

Hi,

To me, it looks like you have two problems. First of all, your cooling solution is not working for you. Second, you said it all right here:
Complete shutdown - a sign of things to come?
Your power supply is actually too small and not a good brand name either, so you will have difficulties with this rig. That is my opinion.

Well, the power supply situation is something I can handle - I was actually considering it, since the damn thing is far from "noiseless" as advertised. How much of an effect does an insufficient power supply have on generating heat, though, if any?

As for my cooling situation, I think I'm at a loss as to what to do on that front...I just fired up the BIOS and took a look at the temperature reading for the CPU in there, and on start-up it was at 59 degrees. After shuffling around and trying to find the voltage readings, which I must confess I could not locate, I checked it again and the CPU was reading at 66 degrees. EEeep. And this is just after start-up...I know it's an AMD chip, and I know they run hot, but is there anything I can do in that direction to alleviate the heat?

I purchased a PCI exhaust fan a few months ago and attempted to install it, but my case is so jam packed, I couldn't fit it in the single PCI slot I had left...

Hi,

That CPU temp is too high if that is an accurate reading. Tell us what case fans you have, where they are placed, and which direction they are blowing.
Hi,

Could you pinpoint this issue more. Like back of case in the bottom, in the center, near the top. Just give us all those details and be very specific. Tell us about your heatsink fan, blowing down or pulling air up? Did you use artic silver or the factory pad when you put it together?

Hey, Athlons aren't that hot although some of them run a little hotter if a few years old. The newer ones (I have both an Athlon and a P4) don't even run as hot as a Pentium4 in a lot of cases. If you are over 40 to 43c at idle, that is just too much regardless of which Athlon you have IMHO.

Post back and let's talk about these issues.

I just went under the hood, as it were, and snapped a photo. I bought the computer about 2.5 years ago; HP a510n, all out of the box and ready, so I can't answer as to the direction of the heat sink fan blowing, or the type of cooler used, since it was all done factory-side. The only upgrades I have done to it were to add another stick of 512 RAM (DDR SDRAM, if I recall correctly), install a new video card (9800 PRO 128 Mb RAM) and disable the lousy onboard graphics, and the new lackluster PSU from earlier this year.

The CPU and heat sink fan are located near the center of the whole tower - as in the picture. Would that I could add a fan in the front as well, but as you can see, the hard drive is mounted vertically at the bottom front...so with the optical drives and front USB readers and whatnot, there's no real estate in the front. I had forgotten that I had two un-used PCI slots, but the proximity of the AGP slot prevents me from using the one directly below it; and the size of the rear exhaust fan I wanted to install also precluded installing it in the one above the modem card, at the bottom. I suppose I could take out the modem card, since I don't use the modem and have my DSL hooked in through the ethernet in the back, but I don't know how effective it would be being so far from the "action" (heat) of the CPU...there is a rear case fan installed (just behind the CPU, in the back in the picture).

Just gave it another blow of compressed air while I was in there - feel free to ask more questions...is it a matter of the heat sink fan or coolant being ineffective and/or needing to be replaced? After all, the computer is 2.5 years old...

Hi,

Tell you what, let's play around with this baby for a bit. Leave the side of the case off and then put a house type fan blowing directly into the CPU area and see if that brings down the temp.

Report back with what temps you get that way while the fan is blowing in there. Then, put it under stress working hard and see what the temps are then with the fan still blowing in there.. The Sensorview program under my signature is one of the best for monitoring the temps.

Be sure to see if it shuts down with a fan blowing in there as we try to pinpoint the exact cause of your shutdowns.

A couple of other talking points. Ribbon cables can block the natural air flow of a case. Therefore, I have gotten to the point that I use only the round cables anymore because they help air flow. Yes, they are a little more expensive, but that helps. If you can't get this baby to cool a little better, (let's try a couple of other things first) then you might want to consider an aftermarket heatsink fan instead of what came with the computer. Just throwing ideas out to think about only at this point.

Post back with questions/concerns.

Thanks for the input. Will go in search of a fan to test this out...

I installed SpeedFan (from your signature) earlier to take a look at temperatures. I just logged from an mmorpg (City of Villains) after an hour or two of play, and took a look at the temp, and it read 59 celsius for the CPU, and 39/31 for the case and hard drive respectively. Is Sensorview more reliable?

I wouldn't mind so much the replacing the fan/heatsink...I can't imagine HP's being top-of-the-line when it comes to that sort of thing - heck, the original PSU was a mere 250W...I'm sure there's something at NewEgg that would be of better quality, and it would be good to learn how to do this...

Will post back with any findings I might have...off in search of a fan...

Okay, so I just did the fan test - opened the case, popped a fan near the side, and fired the computer up. At start-up and all the way through some normal surfing on the internet, it was floating around 45 to 46 degrees in SpeedFan's measurements...the motherboard was a cool 19 degrees, and the hard drive was fine too.

Just to see what would happen, I turned the fan off, and watched the CPU temperature tick several numbers higher over a couple of minutes, so I turned the fan back on and loaded up an mmorpg. Went to the most graphic intensive zone in the game, and jaunted around a little bit, and checked in every now and then on the temperatures. At the range of 88 to 100 percent CPU usage, I was averaging anywhere from 60 to 65 degrees on the CPU...this is with the fan and the case opened.

Now that I have logged off and am back to just internet stuff, my CPU is reading at a steady 51 to 53 degrees.

So, what am I going to be purchasing at Fry's as an early Christmas present to myself? LOL
